Some salesman will do just about anything to get a home security sale including lying through their teeth. Here are some of the most used tactics and how to protect yourself:

1. They say, “I’m from your security company and we’re in your neighborhood performing system updates.” If the security company you’re with hasn’t called you in advance then this is your first red flag. Just because the person at your door has a logo on it from your security company doesn’t mean they are with them.

No matter what someone is selling it is important to call their company to confirm they are legitimate. Ask them what company they are from and look for their number on the internet, don’t call a number they give you. Employees will almost always have an identification number and you can confirm with customer service that they do work for the company

2. They say, “Since you live on a corner you have been selected to be an advertising home.” Let me let you in on a little secret: Everyone who is with that company is an advertising home. You have not been singled out they tell this to everyone to make the sale. The security system isn’t free but some of the equipment is if you sign a very long contract. Be sure to read the entire contract.
